Aims and Intentions: How did it start?
A first-hand view into the life of todays of today’s youth, is our future safe in their hands?
This cross-media production will be 2/3-minute clip that is the intro to a documentary called “How did it start?”. A large part of this intro will consist panning shots giving a strong sense of the location and environment of the area and surroundings, this will also include the non-diegetic sound of a voice over. The voice over will be telling the viewers facts about smoking, the dangers and severity globally and in the UK. We will then be introduced to the presenter with a medium close-up shot, to get us familiar with who he is and what he looks like as he is our unique selling point. This shot will be then followed by another couple of shots continuing to give a sense of location, joined by another voice over to inform us where our presenter is about to go and who he’s going to meet, these shots will be a variation of panning shots, high angle and low angle shots.
I will construct representations of individuals and a select group of the British youth through the choice of age group, this episode of “How did it start?” is focused on British teenagers that currently go to sixth form college, the group of students in this documentary will all be wearing college lanyards and school bags and they will all be smoking cigarettes to help construct the representation that a large ratio of students at college do smoke. Representations of different classes in society will be shown when the presenter asks the students a bit about their background and their different answers to the questions will highlight the difference of the classes e.g. upper class and lower class.
I will reach the target audience through having a unique presenter. The presenter chosen will be portrayed as an alpha male, the man to be, that is sent on a new journey every week that requires a lot of bravery and strength, this will encourage other men to watch it, to see what crazy journey the presenter is being sent on this week. The female viewers will also be drawn in through the presenter being an attractive alpha male, they’ll want to see the man in action and see all the courage it takes to go on these journeys to unveil the truth of how certain things started.
I have done some research into the channel 5 commissions and what they’re looking for is “Broad, robust documentary series for 9pm with clear irresistible proposition and intelligence at its heart”, my documentary will be reporting on the harms and danger of smoking and possibly the use of drugs so not only is it giving information and new knowledge to viewers but is also raising awareness to the matter and making people aware of the helplines there are, but that is only this one specific episode. Each week the documentary will be reporting on a different major problem.
This cross-media production will demonstrate digital convergence through the use of a hashtag, this hash tag will be included either on the front cover of the magazine or in the double page spread. The hashtag will be #howdiditstart?, the purpose of this will be to get it trending on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to have people talking about the show but to also request new ideas of topics that we can investigate as another episode, this way the viewers can get involved and be credited if their idea is used on the show.
